Sunday, March 21, 2010

A high consumption of marijuana on a long-term causes brain damage, according to a recent Australian study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

Murat Yücel and colleagues compared 15 men (mean age 40 years) who smoked more than 5 joints daily for over 10 years to 16 men (mean age 36 years) does not consume cannabis.

Images of the brain showed a reduction in volume of the hippocampus, a brain region involved in regulating emotions and memory, and the amygdala involved in fear and aggression. The hippocampal volume was reduced on average by 12% and the amygdala of 7%.

Cannabis use was also associated with psychotic symptoms below the diagnostic threshold, types of schizophrenia and mania and a lower verbal memory performance without the latter is correlated with the volume of the hippocampus and the amygdala.

"Although modest use may not have a significant neurotoxic effects, these results suggest that daily use is important toxic to brain tissue. More studies are needed to determine the degree and mechanisms of damage and long-term evolution of recovery after abstinence, "say the researchers.

The level of research in France

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Despite a sub-numerical representation (less than 5% of research units from INSERM and CNRS), French researchers involved in research on musculoskeletal diseases have led to major advances for several of these pathologies.

For example, thanks to the discovery by French researchers of antigens responsible for a diagnostic test for rheumatoid and prognosis of the disease has been developed.

Regarding research on osteoporosis, serum markers for assessing the risk of fractures and new genes responsible for the anabolic activity of bone cells have been identified.
In the field of osteoarthritis, the genes modulating the activity of synthesis of chondrocytes were also found.

Finally, French researchers have demonstrated the feasibility of repairing bone loss using marrow cells fixed on natural biomaterials (coral).

Developing research in osteo-articular France requires:
- To attract young researchers to this area, thus facilitating the return to France of those parties to acquire additional training abroad
- Develop technical platforms are severely lacking both in exploring the cellular and experimental models for studies from human samples.
