Pancreatic cancer is a rare cancer, often diagnosed more than 70 years. The disadvantage is that it is frequently detected late. Update on risk factors for pancreatic cancer and its symptoms.

The pancreas is composed of two parts, the exocrine pancreas that produces enzymes essential for digestion, and endocrine pancreas, which produces hormones including insulin to regulate blood sugar in the blood.

A tumor can develop in one or the other party, but in 95% of cases, the exocrine pancreas is affected.


What are the risk factors for pancreatic cancer?

Smoking multiplies by 2.7 the risk of being affected by pancreatic cancer. The risk increases with intensity and duration of smoking, but decreases in smoking cessation.

The other risk factor for pancreatic cancer is found heredity, but genetic predisposition explain only a small portion of these cancers. When multiple cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed in the same family, genetic counseling may be proposed to assess its own risks and offer personalized monitoring.

Other risk factors for pancreatic cancer is suspected as the consumption of alcohol and a diet high in animal fats.
